Sustainable & Eco-friendly Eyewear

Most eyeglasses available today are made from plastic, cheap metals, and other non-degradable materials.

Once discarded, they usually end up sitting in landfills. This only adds to the environmental crisis our planet is already facing.

The easy availability of low-priced glasses has lured people to buy more than they need and trash what they don’t.

What are eco-friendly glasses made of?

Most eco-friendly glasses are made from biodegradable and natural materials. This means that after you throw them out, they are broken down by bacteria and organisms. They do not sit in landfills or pose a threat to the environment.

The most common material used to make eco-friendly sunglasses and eyeglasses is cellulose acetate.

Cellulose acetate is derived from natural substances like cotton and wood pulp. It is lightweight and can be made in any color or shape.

At Coco Leni, all our glasses are made from natural materials. We use bamboo, wood, Italian acetate, and ethically sourced Buffalo horn.

Benefits of Eco-friendly eyewear

Hypoallergenic

Since most eco-friendly glasses are made out of natural and sustainable materials, they are more skin-friendly and hypoallergenic than plastic and cheap metal eyewear

Style statement

Choosing to be eco-friendly doesn't mean that you have to compromise on style or quality. You will find eco-friendly eyeglasses and sunglasses in almost every style, shape, and color.

Great for the environment

It’s always satisfying to know that your purchase is not harmful to the environment. Eco-friendly eyewear does not require much processing and is easily degradable once disposed of.

Long lasting

We use only the best natural materials that we can find and then handcraft them into the glasses you wear.

Lightweight

Acetate frames are lightweight making them more comfortable to wear for longer periods or daily use

What about contact lenses? Are they good for the environment?

Disposable contact lenses can be used for a day, a month, or a year depending on the type you purchase. Once they reach their expiration, we purchase a new pair.

This might seem trivial because of their small size, and therefore we do not think twice before throwing them down the sink or the drain or anywhere for that matter.

These lenses break down into smaller pieces and eventually into microplastics that seep into the ocean. Fish and other aquatic creatures mistake these particles for food and consume them. This endangers marine life and ends up polluting the ocean.

Why you should consider making the switch to eco-friendly glasses

  • Reduce the negative impact on the environment
  • Prevent microplastics from entering the oceans and food chains
  • Reduce the amount of waste we generate
  • Sustainable and cost-effective in the long run
  • Easily disposable and biodegradable
  • While bigger pieces of plastics can be pulled out of the oceans, once they break down into microplastics it becomes near to impossible to do so
